Jay Bhagawan Sreekrishna….. 23 December 2012,Sunday is Swargawathil Ekadashi in Kerala. There are 24 Ekadasi in a year and Swargawathil Ekadasiis the most powerful one.
"Vaikunta Dwaram"- the gate to the heaven - is opened on this day. This is the passage encircling the innermost sanctum of the Lord .For those who observes Swargavathil Ekadasi , it is believed that the gates to heaven is kept open for when that person's soul leaves the physical body. The soul ends its cycle of death and rebirth by attaining the ultimate salvation, free from this mortal coil. Swargavathil Ekadasi is also known as "Vaikunta Ekadashi" or "Mukkoti Ekadasi". As Bhagavan said…. Just as among snakes “Sesh-Naga” is the best, among birds “Garuda” is the best, among sacrifices the “Asvamedha” is the best, among rivers “Mother Ganga” is the best…….so among all fasting days” Ekadashi” is the best…. Ekadasi is the name of the Goddess that arose from Lord Vishnu to defeat Demon Mura. The Legend is like this. Once while Bhagwan Narayan was restingin YogaNidra a demon named Murdanav came and challenged Him to a duel. Suddenly a damsel appeared, evolved out of the Ekadash indriyas of God --.(The ten indriyas - the five karma indriyas (mouth, hands, feet, anus and genital organs) and five gnan indriyas (eyes, ears, nose, skin a
nd tongue). The ten indriyas along with the mind are collectively known as “Ekadash indriyas”.) Murdanav was so attracted to this damsel that he asked her to marry him. The damsel agreed, but only if he agreed to a duel with her, Blinded by passion, he fought with her & she killed him. Pleased with her, Bhagavan granted her a boon. She asked, "O Prabhu! As I have manifested from your Ekadash indriyas, let my name be Ekadashi. I am wedded to tap (austerity) and I desire that people should observe the Ekadashi vrat (fast) and control their Ekadash indriyas on this day. Pleased with her divine act, Bhagavan Vishnu blessed her that “anyone who observes Ekadasi fast will be freed of their sins and will attain Moksha”…..Narayana … Narayana… Ever since, we Hindus fast on Ekadashi.

How to observe ekadashi..Ekadashi fast begins on the day before the Ekadasi-" Dashami" ,continues on the day of Ekadasi and ends on the Dwadashi, the day after Ekadasi. However, complete fast is observed only on the day of Ekadasi, irrespective of gender. On 'Dashami , devotees who observe Ekadasi fasting are to take only lunch. On Ekadasi, the next day, they have to maintain a complete fast and engage in prayers and meditation of Lord Narayana. But those devotees who have health problems or those who work can also opt for a partial fast by avoiding food made of rice. Those taking partial fast can consume fruits and milk. Strictly avoid eating rice and grains, honey, meat etc. Do not apply oil on the day. Also The thulsi leaves(for Garland or Archana) should not be picked on the day but on the previous day.The most important thing is to Spend the day in purifying the mind and body. And that can be achieved only by chanting Vishnu Ashotharam,Vishnu Sahasranamam Or Simple Chanting of – Om Namo Narayana Or any prayers dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Bhagavan Sri Krishna…... That night, usually people keep vigil the whole night . But those devotees who have health problems or those people who work can avoid keeping vigil at night. Staunch devotees who observe Ekadasi fasting do not sleep on the day. They spend the whole night at Vishnu temples or by singing prayers or listening stories dedicated to Lord Narayana. The fast is broken on the next day (Dwadashi-12th day) by visiting any vishnu temple and having the Theertha from the temple. Those devotees who can’t go to the temple should take bath in early morning, offer prayers to Lord Vishnu by lighting a lamp and then can break the fast by having the Thulase Theertham or Malar Theertham in your home itself…… Jay Sree Guruvayurappa……..
