LIFE BEGINS AT SIXTY

Life can begin at 60, it is all in your hands!

S. Ramachandran - Courtesy The Hindu

Many people feel unhappy, health-wise and security-wise, after 60
years of age owing to the diminishing importance given to them and
their opinion. But it need not be so, if only we understand the basic
principles of life and follow them scrupulously. Here are ten mantras
to age gracefully and make life after retirement pleasant.

1. Never say ‘I am aged': There are three ages, chronological,
biological, and psychological. The first is calculated based on our
date of birth; the second is determined by the health conditions and
the third is how old you feel you are. While we don't have control
over the first, we can take care of our health with good diet,
exercise and a cheerful attitude. A positive attitude and optimistic
thinking can reverse the third age.

2. Health is wealth: If you really love your kith and kin, taking care
of your health should be your priority. Thus, you will not be a burden
to them. Have an annual health check-up and take the prescribed
medicines regularly. Do take health insurance cover.

3. Money is important: Money is essential for meeting the basic
necessities of life, keeping good health and earning family respect
and security. Don't spend beyond your means even for your children.

You have lived for them all through and it is time you enjoyed a
harmonious life with your spouse. If your children are grateful and
they take care of you, you are blessed. But never take it for granted.

4. Relaxation and recreation: The most relaxing and recreating forces
are a healthy religious attitude, good sleep, music and laughter. Have
faith in God, learn to sleep well, love good music and see the funny
side of life.

5. Time is precious: It is almost like holding a horse's reins. When
they are in your hands, you can control them. Imagine that everyday
you are born again. Yesterday is a cancelled cheque. Tomorrow is a
promissory note. Today is ready cash use it profitably. Live this
moment.

6. Change is the only permanent thing: We should accept change it is
inevitable. The only way to make sense out of change is to join the
dance. Change has brought about many pleasant things. We should be
happy that our children are blessed.

7. Enlightened selfishness: All of us are basically selfish. Whatever
we do, we expect something in return. We should definitely be grateful
to those who stood by us. But our focus should be on the internal
satisfaction and happiness we derive by doing good to others, without
expecting anything in return.

8. Forget and forgive: Don't be bothered too much about others'
mistakes. We are not spiritual enough to show our other cheek when we
are slapped in one. But for the sake of our own health and happiness,
let us forgive and forget them. Otherwise, we will be only increasing
our BP.

9. Everything has a purpose: Take life as it comes. Accept yourself as
you are and also accept others for what they are. Everybody is unique
and right in his own way.

10. Overcome the fear of death: We all know that one day we have to
leave this world. Still we are afraid of death. We think that our
spouse and children will be unable to withstand our loss. But the
truth is no one is going to die for you; they may be depressed for
some time. Time heals everything and they will carry on.

Drinking Beetroot Juice Benefits Elderly and People With Heart Conditions

by VR Sreeraman

It's not only athletes who can benefit from beetroot juice's performance enhancing properties - its physiological effects could help the elderly or people with heart or lung-conditions enjoy more active lives, suggests a new study.

The new study by researchers at the University of Exeter in conjunction with the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry has revealed the physiological effects of drinking beetroot juice could help a much wider range of people.

In the latest study, the researchers looked at low intensity exercise and found that test subjects used less oxygen while walking - effectively reducing the effort it took to walk by 12pc.

Katie Lansley, a PhD student from the university's Sport and Health Sciences department and lead author of the study, said: "As you get older, or if you have conditions which affect your cardiovascular system, the amount of oxygen you can take in to use during exercise drops considerably. This means that, for some people, even simple tasks like walking may not be manageable.

"What we've seen in this study is that beetroot juice can actually reduce the amount of oxygen you need to perform even low-intensity exercise. In principle, this effect could help people do things they wouldn't otherwise be able to do."

When consumed, beetroot juice has two marked physiological effects. Firstly, it widens blood vessels, reducing blood pressure and allowing more blood flow. Secondly, it affects muscle tissue, reducing the amount of oxygen needed by muscles during activity. The combined effects have a significant impact on performing physical tasks, whether it involves low-intensity or high-intensity effort.

So far the research on the impacts of beetroot juice has only been carried out on younger people who are in good health, but the researchers believe there is no reason why the effects of beetroot juice wouldn't help others.

"While we haven't yet measured the effects on the elderly or those with heart or lung conditions, there is the potential for a positive impact in these populations which we intend to go on and investigate further," Katie Lansley added.

Beetroot juice contains high levels of nitrate. The latest study has proved that this is the key ingredient, which causes the increase in performance, rather than any other component of the beetroot juice.

Professor Andy Jones, the senior scientist on the study and a pioneer of research into beetroot juice, said: "In this study, we were able to use - for the first time - both normal beetroot juice and beetroot juice with the nitrate filtered out. Test subjects didn't know which one they were getting. The drinks both looked and tasted exactly the same. Each time the normal, nitrate-rich juice was used, we saw a marked improvement in performance which wasn't there with the filtered juice - so we know the nitrate is the active ingredient."

The study has been published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

BE A VEGETARIAN

22 Reasons To Go Vegetarian
Visit Us @ www.MumbaiHunGama.com

Vegetarian food is easy to digest

Consider making this healthy choice as one of your new year's resolutions. ..
Stacks of studies confirm that a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables and grains is your best bet for living a longer, healthier and more enjoyable life. There are literally hundreds of great reasons to switch to a plant-based diet; here are 22 of the best:

1 You'll live a lot longer.
Vegetarians live about seven years longer, and vegans (who eat no animal products) about 15 years longer than meat eaters, according to a study from Loma Linda University. These findings are backed up by the China Health Project (the largest population study on diet and health to date), which found that Chinese people who eat the least amount of fat and animal products have the lowest risks of cancer, heart attack and other chronic degenerative diseases.

2 You'll save your heart. Cardiovascular disease is still the
Number one killer in the United States, and the standard American diet (SAD) that's laden with saturated fat and cholesterol from meat and dairy is largely to blame. Plus, produce contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. Incidentally, cholesterol levels for vegetarians are 14 percent lower than meat eaters.

3 You can put more money in your mutual fund.
Replacing meat, chicken and fish with vegetables and fruits is estimated to cut food bills.

4 You'll reduce your risk of cancer.
Studies done at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg suggest that this is because vegetarians' immune systems are more effective in killing off tumour cells than meat eaters'. Studies have also found a plantbased diet helps protect against prostate, colon and skin cancers.

5 You'll add color to your plate.
Meat, chicken and fish tend to come in boring shades of brown and beige, but fruits and vegetables come in all colours of the rainbow. Diseasefighting phytochemicals are responsible for giving produce their rich, varied hues. So cooking by colour is a good way to ensure you re eating a variety of naturally occurring substances that boost immunity and prevent a range of illnesses.

6 You'll fit into your old jeans.
On average, vegetarians are slimmer than meat eaters, and when we diet, we keep the weight off up to seven years longer. That's because diets that are higher in vegetable proteins are much lower in fat and calories than the SAD. Vegetarians are also less likely to fall victim to weight-related disorders like heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

7 You'll give your body a spring cleaning.
Giving up meat helps purge the body of toxins (pesticides, environmental pollutants, preservatives) that overload our systems and cause illness. When people begin formal detoxification programs, their first step is to replace meats and dairy products with fruits and vegetables and juices.

8 You'll make a strong political statement.
It's a wonderful thing to be able to finish a delicious meal, knowing that no beings have suffered to make it..

9 Your meals will taste delicious.
Vegetables are endlessly interesting to cook and a joy to eat. It's an ever-changing parade of flavours and colors and textures and tastes.

10 You'll help reduce waste and air pollution.
Livestock farms creates phenomenal amounts of waste. The tons of manure, a substance that's rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a top pollutants. And that's not even counting the methane gas released by goats, pigs and poultry (which contributes to the greenhouse effect); the ammonia gases from urine; poison gases that emanate from manure lagoons; toxic chemicals from pesticides; and exhaust from farm equipment used to raise feed for animals.

11 Your bones will last longer.
The average bone loss for a vegetarian woman at age 65 is 18 percent; for non-vegetarian women, it's double that. Researchers attribute this to the consumption of excess protein. Excess protein interferes with the absorption and retention of calcium and actually prompts the body to excrete calcium, laying the ground for the brittle bone disease osteoporosis. Animal proteins, including milk, make the blood acidic, and to balance that condition, the body pulls calcium from bones. So rather than rely on milk for calcium, vegetarians turn to dark green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli and legumes, which, calorie for calorie, are superior sources.

12 You'll help reduce famine.
It takes 15 pounds of feed to get one pound of meat. But if the grain were given directly to people, there'd be enough food to feed the entire planet. In addition, using land for animal agriculture is inefficient in terms of maximizing food production. According to the journal Soil and Water, one acre of land could produce 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots or just 250 pounds of beef.

13 You'll avoid toxic chemicals.
The EPA estimates that nearly 95 per cent of pesticide residue in our diet comes from meat, fish and dairy products. Fish, in particular, contain carcinogens (PCBs, DDT) and heavy metals (mercury, arsenic; lead, cadmium) that cannot be removed through cooking or freezing. Meat and dairy products are also laced with steroids and hormones.

14 You'll protect yourself from foodborne illnesses.
According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest in the US, which has stringent food standards, 25 per cent of all chicken sold in the United States carries salmonella bacteria and, the CDC estimates, 70 percent to 90 percent of chickens contain the bacteria campy-lobacter (some strains of which are antibiotic-resistan t), approximately 5 percent of cows carry the lethal strain of E. coli O157:H7 (which causes virulent diseases and death), and 30 percent of pigs slaughtered each year for food are infected with toxoplasmosis (caused by parasites).

15 You may get rid of your back problems.
Back pain appears to begin, not in the back, but in the arteries. The degeneration of discs, for instance, which leads to nerves being pinched, starts with the arteries leading to the back. Eating a plant-based diet keeps these arteries clear of cholesterol- causing blockages to help maintain a healthy back.

16 You'll be more 'regular.'
Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming fiber, which pushes waste out of the body. Meat contains no fibre. Studies done at Harvard and Brigham Women's Hospital found that people who ate a high-fiber diet had a 42 percent lower risk of diverticulitis. People who eat lower on the food chain also tend to have fewer incidences of constipation, hemorrhoids and spastic colon.

17 You'll cool those hot flashes.
Plants, grains and legumes contain phytoestrogens that are believed to balance fluctuating hormones, so vegetarian women tend to go through menopause with fewer complaints of sleep problems, hot flashes, fatigue, mood swings, weight gain, depression and a diminished sex drive.

18 You'll help to bring down the national debt.
We spend large amounts annually to treat the heart disease, cancer, obesity, and food poisoning that are byproducts of a diet heavy on animal products.

19 You'll preserve our fish population.
Because of our voracious appetite for fish, 39 per cent of the oceans' fish species are overharvested, and the Food & Agriculture Organization reports that 11 of 15 of the world's major fishing grounds have become depleted.

20 You'll help protect the purity of water.
It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of mutton, but just 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat. Not only is this wasteful, but it contributes to rampant water pollution.

21 You'll provide a great role model for your kids.
If you set a good example and feed your children good food, chances are they'll live a longer and healthier life. You're also providing a market for vegetarian products and making it more likely that they'll be available for the children.

22 Going vegetarian is easy!
Vegetarian cooking has never been so simple. We live in a country that has been vegetarian by default. Our traditional dishes are loaded with the goodness of vegetarian food. Switching over it very simple indeed.

Top 10 Food Additives to Avoid

Top 10 Food Additives to Avoid

Dr. Mercola

Some food additives are worse than others. Food Matters suggests these as the top ones to avoid:
  1. Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame, also known as Nutrasweet and Equal, is believed to be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of adverse reactions than all other foods and food additives combined.

The artificial sweetener Acesulfame-K has been linked to kidney tumors. All artificial sweeteners are bad news.

  2. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) increases your LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels and contributes to the development of diabetes.

  3. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG is used as a flavor enhancer. It is an excitotoxin, a substance that overexcites cells to the point of damage or death.

  4. Trans Fat

Numerous studies show that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol levels and increases your risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes.

  5. Common Food Dyes

Artificial colorings may contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ.

  6. Sodium Sulphite

This is a preservative used in processed foods. People who are sulfite sensitive can experience headaches, breathing problems, and rashes. In severe cases, sulfites can actually cause death.

  7. Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite

This common preservative has been linked to various types of cancer.

  8. BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) are preservatives that affect the neurological system of your brain, alter behavior and have the potential to cause cancer.

  9. Sulphur Dioxide

Sulphur additives are toxic and in the U.S., they have been prohibited in raw fruit and vegetables. Adverse reactions include bronchial problems, low blood pressure, and anaphylactic shock.

  10. Potassium Bromate

This additive is used to increase volume in some breads. It is known to cause cancer in animals, and even small amounts can create problems for humans.

EAT A HEARTY HEALTHY DIET

What should you eat

To eat a heart-healthy diet, you need to cut down on foods high in saturated fats, like fried foods, red meat, processed meats (cold cuts and hot dogs), some kinds of cheese and most commercially prepared baked goods (muffins, cookies, doughnuts).
Make sure you check the nutrition labels on the foods you buy to ensure you are getting the least possible amount of saturated and trans-fats.
A low-saturated-fat, low-cholesterol eating plan has less than 7 percent of calories from saturated fat.
Reducing your saturated fat and cholesterol intakes doesn't lower your LDL enough, you should increase the amount of soluble fiber in your diet.
Fish is a good choice for a healthy diet. Many types contain high levels of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, which may help lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure and reduce your risk for dangerous blood clotting. Cold-water and fatty fish, such as salmon and herring, contain the most omega-3s.
You should also eat more vegetables, fruit and whole grains like oatmeal and barley. They contain fiber, which fills you up, and also limit your fat intake while still giving you the nutrients you need.
If you eat red meat, here are some ways to decrease fat without giving up flavor:
Decrease the amount of meat in a recipe
Serve smaller portions of meat and add more vegetables, grains and fruit to a meal.
Select a lean cut when you buy meat. The terms round" and "loin" indicate lower fat
Trim all visible fat from meat before cooking.

SCATTERED PAPER WISDOM KNOWLEDGE

SCATTERED PAPER

Once upon a time an old man spread rumors that his neighbor was a thief.
As a result, the young man was arrested.
Days later the young man was proven innocent.
After been released he sued the old man for wrongly accusing him.

In court the old man told the Judge: 'They were just comments, didn't harm anyone..'

The judge, before passing sentence on the case, told the old man:
'Write all the things you said about him on a piece of paper.
Cut them up and on the way home, throw the pieces of paper out.
Tomorrow, come back to hear the sentence.'

The next day, the judge told the old man: 'Before receiving the sentence,
you will have to go out and gather all the pieces of paper that you threw out yesterday.'

The old man said: 'I can't do that! The wind spread them and

I won't know where to find them.'

The judge then replied: 'The same way, simple comments may destroy
the honor of a man to such an extent that one is not able to fix it.
"If you can't speak well of someone, rather don't say anything"

'Let's all be masters of our mouths, so that we won't be slaves of our words.'

Now many believe that if Steven Spielberg were to do a film on the scams in India he would probably call it Swindlers list. So entrenched ladies and gentlemen has corruption become in our country in our society that everyday almost we hear of a new scam. Not long ago it was the common wealth games scam, followed by the adarsh housing societies scam followed by the 2G spectrum scam. Perhaps the biggest of them all in India ever and more recently the loan scam. And what’s really shocking and disturbing is that even before the fire of one scam can die out, a fresh one erupts. Now I’m only reminded of a recent status update on facebook which said, in fact spoke of double standards in our country. When a poor man picks someone’s pocket because he is hungry and he wants to buy a loaf of bread he is caught by the police beaten black and blue, sent to jail and sometimes even dies in police custody. But when ministers rob the country of 100’s and 1000’s of crore rupees, some of them are not even questioned. Toothless hounds - are they guarding our public morality. Have we as a society perfected the art of making a pretence, a big show of fighting corruption. Has civil society completely squandered its power of disapproval of corruption. Is our battle against corruption today a mere knee jerk reaction or a sustained campaign

CANCER FIGHTING PROPERTIES PURPLE SWEET POTATOES

HEALTH TIP: Purple Sweet Potato

The purple sweet potato: The latest in a long line of potentialSuperfoods
The purple sweet potato, the latest food item presented to the general public as a potential superfood. The potato’s colouring contained the chemical anthocyanin, which is known to lower the risk of cancer and could even possibly slow down certain types of the disease. The colour is the important part because the purple colour is responsible for the amount of anthocyanin in the potato. Scientists have already used two strands of anthocyanin to treat colon cancer and found that the pigment slowed down the growth of cancerous cells. Anthocyanin, which produces red, blue or purple colours in different types of food, can also be found in blueberries, red grapes and red cabbage, however the specially grown purple sweet potato has a higher concentration of the chemical than any other species of potato. Dr Weiqun Wang, who was also involved in testing the potato, has said that the new purple sweet potato tasted sweeter than other potatoes but was still perfectly edible. According to Wang, “It’s good not only for cancer prevention but other benefits like antioxidants as well.”

Purple Satsuma imo

SWEET POTATO (Kamote) far exceeds the nutrition and health values of rice.
Here are the benefits of substituting rice with kamote:

1.
Sweet potato is more filling and suppresses hunger pangs longer. It is also cheaper than rice.
2.
Unlike rice, it is easy to grow. It grows in backyards with or without fertilizers. Local government executives can provide their poor communities with idle government land for planting kamote which the entire community can share.
3.
Unlike rice which needs to be eaten with a dish, Sweet Potato tastes good and can be eaten by itself. Thus, substituting rice with sweet potato saves money for other needs.
4.
Rice cannot match the nutritional values of potato. Because rice converts to sugar in the body, the Philippines registers as a top producer of diabetics in the world. The poor tends to load up on rice and less on the dish which are more expensive. That makes them vulnerable to diabetes, an ailment known in developed countries as a rich man’s disease.
5.
The nutritional values of a 3 oz. baked sweet potato are: calories 90, fat 0 g, saturated fat 0 g, cholesterol 0 mg, carbohydrate 21 g, protein 2 g, dietary fiber 3 g, sodium 36 mg

6.
Too much rice consumption can make you sick, but sweet potato(kamote) can bring you to health and keep away some health problems. These have been proved medically.

Sweet Potato (kamote) lowers hypertension, bad cholesterol and even blood sugar when eaten as as a substitute to rice!
(Wonder if they mean white rice or brown rice as well....) The purple sweet potato (kamote) is particularly effective for lowering hypertension.

The Korean medical documentary credits the sweet potato (kamote) as high fiber and is one of the best foods that one can eat to prevent cancer!

sulekha bloggers meet

My dear friends, This blog is dedicated to our sulekhites for their efforts, time and energy to share the knowledge with others. Blogging is a scale to measure ourselves and to know about various subjects.

The blogger’s responsibility is to deliver the message they want to convey through their blogs to others. It should reach the readers mind for a healthy discussion. It is a showcase of our thoughts presented in its full form. It acts as a stress buster too...For many of us it is a desire to spread the message and to hone our writing skills.

Each blogger is unique and the encouragements one get from the interactions acts as a catalyst to write more and more. We get our recognitions through various subjects when it is read by many. It is our duty to read other’s presentations whenever time permits and responds to our comments as we expect the same from others to ours.

Motivations are a powerful tool and when it is aligned with authentic values it becomes a worthy presentation. It’s more about connecting with readers, networking with writers, exchanging information and opinions, sharing thoughts and experiences. And when it’s fulfilling there is such an amount of satisfaction of delivering something worth while.

When we joined this blog space we were all strangers and during the course of time we get acquiescence to interact on the subject with deeper discussions as well as enhancing, the value of the subject through our interactions. We are able to learn more and share more.

Sulekha is definitely an awesome place which provides the space for all of us to present our thought process. It is a place where we have volunteered to join ourselves or through our friends invite or through a web link.

A site which offers the freedom of expressions without moderation and that has its own plus & minus points. Yes it is up to the bloggers who wants to use it as a media to express themselves or to play a critic role on the subject matter. As long as it is not exploited for any personal gain or to settle score with others the blog space is quite a comfortable space.

Off late, bloggers have taken it for granted to write any thing they want or to raise their frustrations against the management for some reasons or the other that turns out to be a sour taste. We know pretty well that the Team sulekha has been kind enough to sort out the technical glitches despite their tight schedules. Their response to sort out issues to each blogger is some thing worth while when compared to the other social site. We also should give them sufficient time to improve the site presentations & user friendly mode of communications.

We must remember that whatever we write in blog space being read by many netizens who browse through search engines for a subject and our blogs are not read by our members alone. Once this awareness comes within us we will present our write - ups with more meaningful articles.

Self discipline and decorum to public forum are indispensable for any site members and we must adhere to this basic rule. If at all there is an issue why not they send that through a personal note with the concerned & get clarified than writing in an open forum to invite unpleasant situations. At any cost we must abide by ourselves not to indulge in personal abuse or ganging up against each other.

This is my personal experience of having spent more than 8 years in various social sites. I find Sulekha is more cordial, respectable and lively to each member.

We are able to meet many intellectual gems here whose vast experience in various professions expressed through their blogs & comments. We must thank Sulekha for providing this opportunity to meet others in person too.

We had many get together in various cities when we go on our personal visits. Even Team sulekha invited us to visit their office for interactions and took notes of our valued inputs.

We build a platform to meet many likeminded friends and in the long run we are all bound to be a family of well wishers. Listening to our heart and expressing what we have been hearing, Connecting with and building community with other people.

Let us build the friendship & fellowship. I personally invite all bloggers to join at Hotel Ashoka, Egmore - Chennai on 13-14th Novemeber 2010. Sulekha Blogger Meet!

SELF CONFIDENCE

Tips to Improve Self Confidence - Junaid Tahir

Here are some quick tips to improve your Self Confidence. If we are committed to have a healthy self confidence there are many things you can do every day to boost your self confidence, each small steps that will help you to reach your goal. The good news is that self-esteem is not fixed and can be improved, try some of the steps below to boost your confidence and self-esteem.

1) Identify your successes. Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you excel, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to take pride in them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

2) Look in the mirror and smile. Studies surrounding what's called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to register certain emotions. So by looking in the mirror and smiling every day, you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

3) Exercise and eat healthy. Exercise raises adrenaline and makes one feel happier and healthier. It is certainly an easy and effective way to boost your self-confidence.

4) Turn feelings of envy or jealousy into a desire to achieve. Stop wanting what others have just because they have it; seek things simply because you want them, whether anybody else has them or not.

5) When you're feeling superbly insecure, write down a list of things that are good about you. Then read the list back. You'd be surprised at what you can come up with.

6) Don't be afraid to push yourself a bit - a little bit of pressure can actually show just how good you are!

7) You can try taking a martial arts or fitness class/course (or both). This will help build confidence and strength. Invest in some new clothing and donate some of your old clothing to send a message to yourself that you both look sharp and feel sharp.

9) Try to make yourself talk positively at all times. When you hear yourself saying you can't do something, stop and say you can. Unless you try, you will never know whether you are able to or not.

10) Don't get wrapped up in your mistakes and dwell on bad points; they can contrast your good points or even give you something to improve. There's no feeling like being good at something you were really bad at.

11) Don't confuse what you have with who you are. People degrade their self worth when comparing possessions.

12) Surround yourself with nurturing friends, not overly critical individuals who make you feel inadequate or insecure. This could do great harm and damage to your self confidence.

Always remember "There is hair line crack between success and failure" Be sure to push yourself a bit, who knows that bit may lead you to success

VEGETERIAN-22 VALID POINTS TO GO FOR
